The love I have for summer is like nothing else. All of my favourite things are associated with summer. Tanned skin, longer days, salted caramel ice cream, beach sessions and of course, babin summer wear.
Life is just better in the summer.
Surprisingly, Melbourne has already flicked the switch and we have already had more hot days than we saw last summer, and it’s only spring!
Paris Fashion Week, which is where the leading global fashion designers show case their Autumn/Winter collection for the northern hemisphere, presented the trends that we will see the coming season. However, countries like Australia who are entering summer, translate these trends to season appropriate attire.
I alike the 60s and 70s trends with what we are going to see in the coming summer months.
Here are a few of the key trends we will begin to see hit our stores and the designers who have included them in their SS16 collection.
Strange, I know, but yes, leather will be featured in retail stores this summer. Maybe not thick leather jackets, but patches of leather and leather shorts.
H&M’s studio range, which was showcased in PFW, included gorgeous leather pieces that are already on sale here in Australia.
More suited to summer, the boho look is emerging back into our stores. Long sleeve maxi dresses, with a floral or paisley print being a very popular style across many designers.
You can dress top to bottom in nude or blocking with colour. Because it’s quite light, I think this trend translates well into summer fashion.
Ladies, time to steer away from the go-to monochrome this season. Sunset hues are going to be huge this hot season. Gorgeous colours such as grape and pop orange coupled with nudes or whites are my personal favorites.
Spring dabbled in the cowboy style, and it is continuing into summer with fringing. Designers, such as Seed and H&M have used fringing in their collections, with stunning skirts and vests that make the best statement piece.
Culottes are here to stay.
This trend wasn’t widely picked up in Australia as it was in Asia, but is finally starting to become more and more popular and will be summer fashion favourite.
Also very popular in Spring, intricate lace is continuing into summer. However, we’ll begin to see it used less with pastels and more with bright sunset hues and navy.
Say goodbye to black and hello to the new black, Navy. This new alternative is still flattering but not as dark and harsh as our winter go-to.
Loved and hated by many, flares are here for summer. Not just a denim trend this season, we’ll also be seeing it more so in pants. I dare you to get a pair and embrace the trend. It will make you feel slimmer and taller.
GRAPHIC PRINT // MODERN STYLE
With less of a 60s undertone, graphic print and modern shapes are one of my favourite styles. Key pieces such as; matching two pieces, playsuits, shorts and mod shaped dresses with graphic prints will be perfect statement outfits for Christmas parties and your Summer night drinks.
OFF THE SHOULDER
And last but not least, the classic 60s style, off-the-shoulder tops. This feminine style just says summer. You’ll find playsuit variations, dresses, as well as loose tops. With some off the shoulder tops you can wear them both casually to a BBQ and also dressed up for a party.
Goodbye Spring, and hello Summer. Time to refresh my wardrobe!
